The Project for Flood Mitigation in Ormoc City (Phase I and II)

The Project for Flood Mitigation in Ormoc City (Phase I and II) was a Grant Aid by the Government of Japan as a token of friendship and cooperation between the Philippines and Japan. The Project was implemented from 1998-2001 as a response of the two countries to the massive flooding and landslides that devastated Ormoc City in 1991.  The activities completed in Ormoc City through the project included construction of slit sabo dams in Anilao and Malbasag Rivers, river improvement works, and construction of river structures and bridges. The mitigating facilities protected the city from succeeding typhoons in 2003 and 2013 prompting JICA to cite Ormoc City in 2016 as a model for disaster resiliency in the Philippines.
